“The Deposit”

Luke 6:45, Matthew 12:33-37


INTRODUCTION


We discovered in James 3 that no man can tame the tongue. We simply cannot…but the Holy Spirit can work in us through His Word! The text contains extraordinary revelation regarding the tongue. What you fill your heart with is what will eventually come out of your mouth.



I.          THE FRUIT

Matthew 12:33, “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.


            A.  The Good Tree.

                        1.  Good Tree. [beautiful, good, valuable, better]

                        2.  Good Fruit. [fruit, that which originates or comes from something, an effect,

                             result…a work, act, or deed]


            B.  The Bad Tree.

                        1.  Bad Tree. [rotten, worthless, corrupt, unfit for use]

                        2.  Bad Fruit. Corrupt…Fruit. [fruit, that which originates or comes from

                             something, an effect, result…a work, act, or deed]


            C.  Revelation…the Fruit.

1.  The Tree is Known by the Fruit. [known = to come to know, to become known, to perceive and understand] Matthew 7:15-20 


            D.  Rebuke!

    Matthew 12:34a…Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things?

                        1.  A Conundrum.

                                    a.  Evil. [hurtful, evil, derelict, vicious, malicious, lewd…of the evil one]

                                    b.  Speaking. [talk, say, utter words, to use words]

                                                1)  Good Things? [of good nature, pleasant, excellent, honorable]

     Proverbs 8:7, Ephesians 4:29 



I.          THE FILLING UP

Matthew 12:34b…For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

             A.  Abundance of the Heart.

                        1.  Abundance. [a surplus, a superabundance, that which is left over, overflow]

                        2.  Heart. [the heart, denotes the center of all physical and spiritual life, the

                 inmost part, (fig) thoughts or feelings]

a.     The Mouth Speaks…What is in the Heart. Colossians 3:8,         

       Proverbs 17:20 


III.        THE FILLING UP?

Matthew 12:35,  “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

            

A.  A Good Man.

                        1.  A Good Man. [of good nature, pleasant, excellent, honorable]

                        2.  A Good Deposit. [a deposit, collected treasures, storehouse]

                        3.  Good Things!


            B.  An Evil Man.

                        1.  An Evil Man. [hurtful, evil, derelict, vicious, malicious, lewd…of the evil one]

                        2.  An Evil Deposit. [a deposit, collected treasures, storehouse]

                        3.  Evil Things.



IV.        THE FINDING

Matthew 12:36-37, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”


            A.  Giving Account.

1.  Every Idle Word. [lazy, shunning the labor which one ought to perform,

     useless, inactive, unemployed]

                        2.  Every Idle Word…Giving Account. [give, deliver…logos]

                        3.  Every Idle Word…Judgment. [separating, separation, selection, decision]


            B.  Getting Assessment.

1.  By Your Words…Justified. [to render righteous, to render innocent, to

     pronounce one righteous]

                        2.  By Your Words…Condemned. [separating, separation, selection, decision]
