“The Damage”

INTRODUCTION

As we conclude our study regarding the tongue and the Biblical framing of the use of the tongue…let’s consider the graphic portrait of the damage people do to others with their tongue. Psalm 17:3, Jeremiah 18:18, Proverbs 11:9, Proverbs 10:11, Proverbs 10:14 

I.         Damage…Like A…

             A.  A Whip.

                                    1.  The Scourge. Job 5:21 

                                         a.  Scourging. The difference between a whip and a scourge…A  scourge is a specific type -- one handle on the whip but with many tendrils. So that when a victim is struck with the scourge, it strikes all across the person. 

                   B.  A Razor.

1.  Destruction. Psalm 52:2-4 

                   C.  A Sword.

1.  A Sharp Sword. Psalm 57:4, Proverbs 12:18-19, Psalm 55:21 

                    D.  An Arrow.

1.  The Slaughter. Psalm 64:3, Jeremiah 9:8 

                    E.  A Crushing.

1.  Injured. Proverbs 26:28 

II.        DAMAGE TO YOURSELF

                  A.  Snared.

1.  Trapped. Proverbs 6:2 

   B.  Madness.

1.  Mental Illness. Ecclesiastes 10:12-13

   C.  Defilement.

1.  Unclean. Matthew 15:18
