“The Choice of Obedience”
II Corinthians 10:4-5
II Corinthians 10:4-5, (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
INTRODUCTION
Obedience is a choice. It is a crucial and critical choice that we make daily. As we peruse the Holy Scripture, the Bible connects various behaviors to our willing obedience. My choice to accommodate and facilitate obedience is the key. Let’s consider some connecting points regarding obedience.
I. OBEDIENCE…HUMILITY
Philippians 2:8, And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
A. Humility.
1. Prescribed. James 4:10
2. Promises.
a. Growth. Matthew 18:4, Matthew 23:12
b. Grace. James 4:6
c. Honor. Proverbs 29:23
d. Encouragement. Psalm 10:17, Psalm 9:12, Proverbs 16:19
B. Humility…Put It On .
1. Be Clothed With…I Peter 5:5, Colossians 3:12, Acts 20:19,
Ephesians 4:2
a. Humbleness of Mind. Romans 12:1-2, Daniel 7:25,
II Thessalonians 2:7, vv. 3-4…
II. OBEDIENCE…REPENTANCE
Deuteronomy 30:2, And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
Deuteronomy 30:8, And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day.
A. Repentance Defined.
1. Meaning.
a. The Old Testament. Hebrew = Shuwb = Turn or Return
b. The New Testament.
1) Greek = Metamelomia = Regret / Consequences
2) Greek = Metanoeo = Godly Sorrow…To think
differently.
2. Mastering. It is foundational to your experience. Hebrew 6:1-2
III. OBEDIENCE…SUFFERING
Hebrews 5:8, Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
A. The Fact of Suffering. I Peter 5:10a, But the God of all grace, who hath
called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while…
1. The Promise. Philippians 1:29
2. The Path.
a. Do not be moved. I Thessalonians 3:3
b. Endure. II Timothy 4:5, II Timothy 3:11 (Acts 14)
3. The Payoff. Romans 8:17-18, II Timothy 2:12
B. The Fruit of Suffering. I Peter 5:10b …make you perfect, stablish,
strengthen, settle you.
1. Perfect = Repair, restore, mend.
2. Stablish = To turn in a certain direction, to confirm, establish,
steadfastly set. {STABILITY}
3. Strengthen = To confirm (in spiritual knowledge and power).
4. Settle = To lay a basis for, foundation…to erect.
IV. OBEDIENCE…REVERENCE
I Samuel 12:14, If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:
Acts 9:31, Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
A. Desired Condition.
1. Rest. [Peace, quietness, rest, prosperity]

2. Edification. [Edified = Confirmed, built up]
a. Romans 14:19, I Thessalonians 5:11
3. Multiplied. [To increase and abound] Acts 6:1, Acts 6:7, Acts 12:24
V. OBEDIENCE…CHOOSING
A. Obedience Requires Alteration.
1. Changing. I Peter 1:14
B. Obedience Requires Instruction.
1. Surrender To Truth. Exodus 24:7
C. Obedience Requires Action.
1. Facilitating Obedience. Joshua 24:23-24
